In the last week of 2019, I stayed in the beautiful historic Polish city of Kraków. Near the North West corner of the great market square is a splendid music shop, Kurant (which also houses a small art gallery and in addition serves coffee). Kurant is extremely well-stocked with scores and CDs and other music-related items. I asked an assistant for a book of Polish carols and he immediately handed me a slim volume of carols which he had on the counter. These were arranged for piano. He assured me all the carols in the book were Polish (except Silent Night, which was included but supplied with a Polish text, Cicha noc). This Little Suite of Polish Christmas Carols uses seven melodies from this book. A valued colleague at Cantando, Monika Syroka, confirmed that all the melodies were well-known Polish carols and she also helped in ensuring the titles have been accurately translated from Polish to English. This suite is dedicated to her. The symbols I and II indicate, respectively, a prominent part against an accompanying part and need not be treated literally as manual I and II. Where a section is repeated the registration may, to advantage, be varied.
